Devils Tower
Located in Western Wyoming, this formation was created over 50 million years ago, from the erosion of molten magma. The Tower rises 867 feet from the base and has a diameter over 1,000 feet. Several Indian nations share legends of this place and consider the grounds sacred. Devils Tower is the first named national monument in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt. The other notoriety of this place is the Hollywood film location for "Close Encounters of a Third Kind." This is the only national monument that allows climbers, over 5,000 climbers attempt each year.
